Gusty Winds and Cooler Air: Wintry Weather Expected in Latvia This Weekend
Latvia, April 4, 2025 — As the weekend approaches, residents of Latvia should prepare for gusty winds and a significant drop in temperatures, as forecasts predict wintery weather conditions throughout the country.
Starting on Friday, winds from the north and northwest are expected to strengthen, bringing with them cooler air. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports that nighttime temperatures will likely drop between 0 and +5°C. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to reach only +8 to +13°C, with coastal regions experiencing highs of just +6 to +7°C. The weather will feature variable cloud cover; however, no precipitation is expected during this time.
Meteorologists had earlier suggested the possibility of a heavy snow cover developing in eastern Latvia over the weekend. However, they have since updated their predictions, indicating that the chance of significant snowfall has decreased. "The precipitation zone that could cause heavier snowfall is now projected to shift southeast by Sunday," forecasters stated.
While heavy snowfall is no longer anticipated in much of the country, some regions can expect light snow or wet snow on Friday night into Saturday morning. Areas, particularly in the east, may see a 2-4 cm accumulation of snow, which could linger due to fluctuating temperatures that drop below freezing overnight.
These wintry conditions will pose risks for drivers, as roads are likely to become icy during the night and early morning hours. On Saturday, precipitation is expected to diminish, primarily affecting the eastern part of Latvia. Winds will continue from the north and northwest, with gusts reaching 15 to 19 m/s along the coast at night and further inland during the day. Nighttime temperatures on Saturday will range from -1 to +3°C, while daytime highs will not exceed +5°C. The brisk northerly wind will make the air feel even colder.
On Sunday, conditions are set to slightly improve with dry weather forecasted, although gusty winds will persist. The night leading into Sunday is predicted to be significantly colder, with temperatures dropping to between -1 and -6°C across many areas. Daytime temperatures will remain just above freezing nationwide.
As the new week begins, colder and windy weather is expected to continue. Intermittent precipitation is anticipated during the first days of the week, primarily in the form of rain in the west and snow in the east. Nighttime temperatures will largely remain below freezing, with day temperatures potentially rising above +5°C only by midweek.
Residents are advised to remain cautious while traveling, especially during nighttime and early morning hours when roads may be slick.
