On April 1, the Icelandic Meteorological Agency announced a rising threat of volcanic activity near Reykjavik. The agency reported that magma is beginning to ascend beneath the surface, prompting a precautionary alert regarding a potential eruption.

Local authorities have taken swift action in response to the warning. Residents and tourists around the famous Blue Lagoon, a luxury hot spring resort, as well as the nearby fishing town of Grindavik, which has about 40 households, have been evacuated to ensure their safety.

Iceland, known for its dramatic landscape of glaciers and volcanoes, has experienced a series of volcanic eruptions since 2021. This potential eruption could mark the 11th since that year in the southern region, particularly around the Reykjanes Peninsula, which has shown increased geological activity.

To date, the volcanic eruptions from the Reykjanes Peninsula have not directly impacted the capital city, Reykjavik. Furthermore, there have been no reports of ash dispersal reaching the stratosphere, which has allowed air traffic to continue without significant disruptions.

As the situation develops, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed and follow instructions from local authorities. The Icelandic Meteorological Agency will continue to monitor the geological activity and provide updates as necessary.
