Baljeet Singh to Bring New Delhi Restaurant to Chandigarh

Chandigarh, India – Baljeet Singh, a restaurant entrepreneur based in Norway, has announced plans to open his acclaimed restaurant, New Delhi, in Chandigarh. Singh's journey from a small village near Kapurthala to becoming a celebrated restaurateur in Norway has caught significant attention, particularly following his receipt of the prestigious Annapurna Certificate, awarded by the Indian government.

During a recent press event at the Chandigarh Press Club, Singh reflected on his storied career in the culinary field. He moved to Norway in 1987 to support his father in their family restaurant. Recounting his early days, he stated, "It was not all that easy when I boarded the flight to Oslo. There were many challenges, including the language, but step-by-step I learned it all, from the kitchen to catering to the guests."

The Annapurna Certificate, established in 2023 by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations under the Ministry of External Affairs, recognizes Indian culinary excellence worldwide. In 2025, New Delhi was one of only five restaurants across the globe honored with this recognition, selected from 120 applicants. Singh's establishment has been serving authentic Indian cuisine for nearly 40 years and managed to meet the stringent criteria for the award, including a regular patronage of at least 5,000 guests per month.

"The Annapurna Award symbolizes cultural pride and culinary excellence," Singh explained. "It’s an appreciation for connecting cultures and sharing the love of Indian food across borders." He highlighted the challenges and commitment required in the restaurant industry, noting the need to nurture his establishment like a newborn, emphasizing care, consistency, and passion.

Singh's dedication to his community was also evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when he provided free meals to healthcare workers in Norway, illustrating the spirit of Indian hospitality.

As he prepares to expand his culinary footprint in India, Singh has set his sights on Chandigarh and Goa for his next restaurant locations. When asked about popular dishes in Norway, he chuckled and mentioned, "Butter chicken," a favorite among his patrons.

Singh's vision for bringing New Delhi to Chandigarh promises to enrich the local culinary scene, offering authentic Indian flavors while celebrating the culture he cherishes.
