Consumer Sentiment Surges in Lithuania Compared to Latvia and Estonia
In recent reports, consumer sentiment in Lithuania has shown a notable increase, surpassing that of its Baltic neighbors, Latvia and Estonia. Research conducted by NielsenIQ highlighted this trend in a detailed analysis of retail sales and consumer attitudes for the early months of the year.
Retail Sales Growth
According to NielsenIQ, retail turnover in Lithuania grew by an impressive 6.9 percent in January and February 2025 compared to the same period last year. This growth rate positioned Lithuania ahead of Latvia, which saw a 5.4 percent increase, and Estonia, which recorded a 4.9 percent rise in retail sales.
Improved Consumer Sentiment
The consumer sentiment index in Lithuania also reflected positive changes. In February, it rose by 2 percentage points to reach 3 percent, indicating a more optimistic outlook among consumers. In contrast, this index decreased in both Latvia and Estonia by 1 percentage point, settling at 79 percent and 66 percent, respectively.
Edita Asakavičienė, Head of Strategic Analytics and Insights for North-Eastern Europe at NielsenIQ, commented on the findings, noting that while Lithuanian consumers are experiencing increased anxiety about rising prices, their overall mood remains optimistic. As a result, they are less inclined to save and are willing to spend on diverse purchases.
Conclusion
The data indicates a distinctive upward trend in consumer sentiment in Lithuania, along with strong retail sales growth. This optimism could potentially influence future economic activities in the region, setting Lithuania apart from its Baltic counterparts. As conditions continue to evolve, retail and consumer confidence will be crucial for understanding the economic landscape in the coming months.
