He comes from a long line of musicians, making him the tenth generation in a family of musicians. This deep-rooted heritage is central to his artistic vision. Now living in New York, Stenmark bridges the gap between Swedish traditional folk and the sounds of today.

Born in Gothenburg, Stenmark picked up the trumpet early on, continuing a musical tradition that dates back to the mid-1700s in his family. After finishing his initial music studies in Sweden, he moved to New York to pursue a Master’s Degree at Manhattan School of Music. He has collaborated with artists such as David Byrne and Maria Schneider Orchestra and his trumpet has been heard in the Matrix Resurrections, at the Superbowl and at New York Fashion Week. His approach to music blends gentle, lyrical melodies with modern techniques, electronics and improvisation.

Stenmark has a unique ability to transport listeners from the stillness of Nordic forests to the bustle of Manhattan. He often performs with small ensembles or as a solo act, exploring improvisational ideas inspired by a folk song’s core melody. Some of his compositions feature elements of modern groove, while others are stripped down, focusing on the emotive resonance of the horn. Critics appreciate how he maintains his cultural essence while exploring bold new directions.

TRUE NORTH Connection
Stenmark will present a solo set at the TRUE NORTH 2025 event on April 22. He plans to perform Swedish folk–inspired melodies, layered with live improvisation and contemporary sounds from the big apple. This set illustrates how historic tunes can be brought back to life and find a new meaning, reflecting the times we live in. Visitors may hear echoes of Swedish musical heritage evolving into spontaneous, contemporary flourishes. Stenmark’s performance is a prime example of the event’s mission: celebrating how Nordic traditions adapt in a modern metropolis.

Fans of jazz and world music would not want to miss Oskar Stenmark at TRUE NORTH 2025. The showcase unfolds on Earth Day, April 22, 2025, at the New York Estonian House. Tickets are available through Nordic Artists of New York.
