Three US Soldiers Found Dead in Lithuania Marshes
Lithuania, April 1, 2025 - Three American soldiers who were reported missing during training exercises in Lithuania have been found dead after their recovery vehicle was retrieved from a marsh. The search continues for a fourth soldier who remains unaccounted for, according to a statement from the US Army Europe and Africa.
The soldiers, assigned to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division, went missing on March 25, 2025, while attempting to recover a stranded tactical vehicle. The vehicle, an M88A2 Hercules, was located submerged in the marsh the following day.
Efforts to locate the missing soldiers have involved a multinational search operation led by Lithuanian authorities and assisted by US forces. The ongoing search includes divers from the US Navy and personnel from Lithuania and Poland, as they attempt to recover the 63-ton vehicle and search for the last missing soldier.
Major General Christopher Norrie, the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, expressed condolences, stating, “We mourn with the families and loved ones of these incredible 'Dogface Soldiers' during this unimaginable time.” He emphasized that the search would continue until all personnel are recovered.
The US Army confirmed that they are collaborating with Lithuanian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Additionally, NATO has provided resources to assist in the recovery efforts.
Tammy Bruce, a spokesperson for the US State Department, offered heartfelt sympathies during a press briefing, extending condolences to the soldiers’ families and friends. She commended the exceptional efforts made by US Army personnel, Lithuanian armed forces, and civilian agencies over the past six days.
US forces routinely participate in joint training exercises with NATO allies in Lithuania. President Donald Trump commented on the incident during a press briefing at the White House, noting the weight of the vehicle and speculating on the potential hazards during the recovery attempt, including unstable terrain and harsh weather conditions.
As investigations continue, the military's focus remains on ensuring the safe return of the remaining soldier and providing support to the families affected by this tragic event.
