Norway Commits $285.6 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Ukraine
Kyiv, Ukraine - On March 27, 2025, Norway announced it will provide 3 billion Norwegian krone, equivalent to approximately $285.6 million, for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, as well as to Ukrainian refugees in neighboring Moldova. This decision comes amid ongoing Russian attacks that continue to devastate civilian infrastructure and force more Ukrainians to flee their homes.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that Russia's strikes have escalated against civilian targets, including hospitals, schools, and residential areas. “Russia’s attacks on civilian infrastructure, electricity supplies, hospitals, schools and homes have continued with full force,” he stated. The attack on civilian areas has led to significant casualties, with the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission reporting over 12,654 civilians killed and more than 29,392 injured since February 24, 2022. ### Distribution of Humanitarian Funds
The humanitarian funds allocated by Norway are designated for various organizations and efforts. These include contributions to the UN response in Ukraine and Moldova, support for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies operating in both countries. Funds will also assist Norwegian and international humanitarian organizations with medical evacuations and the provision of necessary aid. A portion of the funds will be set aside for a humanitarian reserve, facilitating rapid response to emerging needs.
Recent Visit to Ukraine
Eide, along with Norwegian Minister of Labor and Social Inclusion Tonje Brenna, visited Ukraine from March 26 to March 27. During their visit, they provided a hybrid solar power plant to Kharkiv Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 8, emphasizing the importance of reliable energy supply for medical facilities during power outages. “We're proud to support Ukraine’s efforts in creating resilient and equitable energy access for all,” Eide added.
Continued Support for Ukraine
Norway has been recognized as a strong ally of Ukraine since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Earlier in March, parliamentary leaders in Norway agreed to increase their assistance to Ukraine by 50 billion Norwegian krone ($4.6 billion), bringing total aid to approximately 85 billion Norwegian krone ($7.8 billion) for the year 2025. As the conflict continues, developments in international aid and support reflect a growing commitment to humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Ukrainian population amidst the ongoing crisis.
