The long-awaited period crime drama Von Fock premiered its pilot episode at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) on November 19, marking a historic milestone for Baltic television. Co-produced by Estonia, Latvia, and Italy, Von Fock is the most expensive TV series ever made in Estonia, demonstrating the region’s growing prowess in high-quality drama production. The series is already set for international distribution through ZDF Studios, which will handle its rollout outside the Baltics and Italy.

The series, based on Ain Kütt’s detective novels, is set in early 19th-century Estonia during the era of Baltic German aristocracy. It follows the story of Paul von Fock (played by Priit Pius), a timid yet ambitious manor owner and court assessor. Tasked with solving murders in the elegant yet treacherous world of noble estates, von Fock is accompanied by his friend Gerhard Wagner (Sten Karpov) as they unravel crimes amidst stunning historical locations. Romance and intrigue abound, particularly in von Fock’s complex relationship with the mysterious Maria von Nottbeck (Aurora Ruffino).

A Baltic-Italian Triumph

The scale and ambition of Von Fock are unparalleled in the Baltic region. Filmed on location in Estonia, Latvia, and Italy, the production brought together an international team of creators, including director Arun Tamm and writers Leana Jalukse and Lillian von Keudell. The collaborative effort united producers from Zolba Productions (Estonia), Berghein Production (Latvia), and Movie.Mento and Albolina Film (Italy). The involvement of Nafta Films and Eesti Telefilm, Estonia’s public broadcasting drama production arm, further underscores the national significance of the project.

The production was not without challenges. According to the producers, assembling the necessary financing and overcoming logistical hurdles required extraordinary teamwork and creativity. Yet the effort has resulted in a show that not only captures the grandeur of the Baltic aristocracy but also promises to put the region on the map for international period drama enthusiasts.

International Distribution by ZDF Studios

With ZDF Studios securing distribution rights, Von Fock is poised to reach audiences far beyond the Baltics. “There is always demand for period mystery dramas, especially ones set in beautiful locations featuring grand houses and upper-class society,” said Mirela Nastase, Director of Drama at ZDF Studios. “But most importantly, Von Fock offers great storytelling that keeps you guessing right until the end.”

The first season, titled The Mystery of the Jack of Clubs, introduces von Fock as he investigates the murder of a gambler found on his estate. Season two, The Mystery of the Golden Medallion, continues the gripping whodunnit format with a shocking crime at a grand summer ball.

A Case Study in Baltic Creativity

Beyond its on-screen appeal, Von Fock represents a case study in Baltic creativity and determination. The production’s success is credited to the relentless efforts of its creative team, led by key producers and a predominantly female-powered production team. The project showcases how Baltic countries can deliver world-class storytelling with universal appeal.

What’s Next for Von Fock

While the Tallinn premiere has set the tone, the series will also debut in Latvia soon, with further plans to captivate international audiences. The buzz around the show is not just about its story but the doors it could open for future high-budget productions in the Baltic region.

Stay tuned for updates on Von Fock as it continues its journey across global screens, bringing Baltic culture and storytelling to the world stage.
