Norway Commits NOK 10 Billion to Train and Equip Ukrainian Brigade
Brussels, April 11, 2025 – Norway has announced a substantial financial commitment of ten billion Norwegian kroner (NOK) to enhance the capabilities of a Ukrainian brigade, a move intended to bolster Ukraine's defense efforts amid ongoing conflict. Defence Minister Tore O. Sandvik made the announcement during a press conference in Brussels, underscoring Norway's proactive role in supporting Ukraine alongside its Nordic and Baltic partners.
Commitment to Training and Equipment
The funding is part of a larger initiative involving cooperation with Ukrainian authorities. Minister Sandvik clarified that this initiative will not create an entirely new brigade but will instead focus on providing modular components to strengthen existing brigades. "Under Norwegian leadership, the Nordic and Baltic countries are collaborating closely with Ukrainian authorities to ensure that the training and equipment are as relevant and effective as possible," Sandvik noted.
A standard brigade typically consists of 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers, equipped with diverse combat capabilities, enabling them to operate as an independent military unit. The flexibility and scalability of this project aim to meet the dynamic needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Components of Norway’s Support
Norway's support will encompass both surplus military equipment from its armed forces and fresh procurements from Ukrainian and international defense industries. "Our contribution includes both equipment from our own defense inventory and the acquisition of ammunition and materiel… Additionally, we will provide training," Sandvik added, highlighting Norway's comprehensive approach to military assistance.
In tandem with this brigade initiative, Norway has allocated further funds to a UK-led support package which includes advanced radar systems and drones. Additionally, Norway has signed agreements to participate in coalitions related to drone development and electronic warfare, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing collective security in the region.
Increased Military Support for Ukraine
Looking ahead, the Norwegian government is set to significantly boost its overall military support for Ukraine in 2025, proposing an additional NOK 50 billion to the Nansen programme. This increase will raise total funding under the programme to NOK 85 billion for 2025, and a total of NOK 205 billion between 2023 and 2030. "The support will focus on providing Ukraine with the vital materials necessary for its defense against Russia," Minister Sandvik affirmed. The new funding will target key areas such as maritime security, air defense systems, and drone capabilities, alongside fostering enhanced collaboration with the Ukrainian defense industry.
Norway’s commitment marks a critical step in international efforts to support Ukraine, reflecting a unified stance among European nations to enhance the country’s defense capabilities during a challenging period.
