Norway Reaffirm Its Support for Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
Kyiv, Ukraine – March 26, 2025 – Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has made a strong statement reaffirming Norway’s commitment to Ukraine during a recent visit to Kyiv. In a social media post, Eide underscored the gravity of the situation in Ukraine, labeling it “the most serious European and Norwegian security challenge of our time.”
Eide arrived in the Ukrainian capital just hours after Russian missiles and drones struck towns and critical infrastructure across Ukraine, highlighting the urgent need for international support. He traveled alongside Tonje Brenna, the Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, with the visit aimed at demonstrating Norway's unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.
“Ukraine is at a watershed moment and Norwegian support is more important than ever,” Eide emphasized during the visit.
Escalation of Tensions
In his remarks, Eide pointed out the broader implications of Russia’s aggression not only for Ukraine but also for Norway and Europe. He stated, “Russia's brutal war against Ukraine has turned European security thinking upside down and created the biggest threat against European and Norwegian security in many decades.”
Norway shares a border with Russia, and Eide reminded attendees that military forces stationed close to the Norwegian border are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine. He expressed concerns over Russia's growing threat to Norway and the Nordic region as a whole.
Financial Commitment to Ukraine
During the visit, Eide highlighted Norway’s commitment to increasing financial support for Ukraine. Earlier this month, the Norwegian government announced plans to more than double its financial assistance to Ukraine in 2025, raising the support to 85 billion kroner (approximately €7.24 billion).
As Eide and Brenna met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the Norwegian officials reiterated their belief in the importance of standing by Ukraine during this critical period.
A Pledge of Support
Eide made a clear declaration: “Norway is with Ukraine all the way to victory.” He thanked Ukraine for its ongoing resistance and reaffirmed that Norway and Europe will not abandon Ukraine but will continue to support it until peace is achieved and the country is rebuilt.
This visit underscores Norway’s strong stance on the conflict and its role as a key ally in providing support to Ukraine in the face of ongoing challenges and adversities.
