Latvia Experiences Sharp Temperature Variations: From -6°C to +20°C
Rīga, April 11, 2025 — Latvia is bracing itself for a dramatic temperature shift, with forecasts indicating a swing from minus six degrees Celsius to a welcoming plus twenty degrees Celsius in the coming days. According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the weather will see varying conditions across the nation, starting with cold temperatures and transitioning to milder weather.
Friday Forecast: Cold Start with Precipitation On Friday, the skies will be predominantly cloudy, yet glimpses of sunshine are expected to break through starting midday. Precipitation will set in across most of Latvia during the night, with potential snowfall in the eastern regions. The snow is forecasted to change to sleet and rain during the day. In certain eastern areas, snow cover may increase by one to three centimeters, and during the snowfall, visibility could reduce to about one thousand meters. Meteorologists are advising caution for road users due to the likelihood of icy patches forming on some road sections overnight.
Wind conditions will be light to moderate, beginning from the southwesterly to westerly direction and shifting towards the west-northwest. This shift is expected to strengthen, with gusts reaching up to 15–16 meters per second in western and central regions. Overnight temperatures will drop to between zero to three degrees Celsius in the west and as low as minus five degrees Celsius in the east. Daytime highs will only reach between two to seven degrees Celsius, with numbers possibly peaking at ten degrees Celsius in the west.
Weekend Outlook: Gradual Warming As the weekend approaches, while cloud cover persists, only light and scattered precipitation is anticipated. Fog conditions may develop in some areas on Saturday evening, extending into Sunday night. Wind conditions will prevail from the northwestern to westerly direction on Saturday, later transitioning to the southwest and strengthening once more to 15–17 meters per second in western and central areas. Winds are expected to ease significantly by Sunday.
Temperature forecasts suggest an overnight drop between minus two to minus six degrees Celsius, with coastal areas hovering around zero degrees Celsius. By Sunday evening, frost may only be observed in isolated spots, with temperatures ranging from minus one to four degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures are expected to fluctuate, reaching around ten degrees Celsius on Saturday and climbing to as much as fifteen degrees Celsius in some locations by Sunday.
Beginning of the Week: Rain and Warming Trends Into the new week, increased cloud cover is predicted, bringing rain to many parts of the country, along with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms. Wind patterns will shift to a lighter regime from the south, facilitating warmer air. Frost is not expected at night, with daytime temperatures potentially soaring to an impressive twenty degrees Celsius.
These shifting weather patterns highlight Latvia's dynamic climate as residents prepare for both the remaining chill and the incoming warmth.
